Simple Present & Simple Past Tense

1.      Simple Present Tens(現在式) - 現在時態主要表示:
l   現在的動作或狀態     
l   經常性的動作或狀態
l   描寫事實或真理

2. Simple Past Tense(過去式) - 過去的動作或狀態。
l   過去發生的事物
 
現在:We go now.
        Do we go now?
        He goes now.
     
  過去:He went yesterday.
        Did he go yesterday?
  *"did"是助動詞"do"的過去式,幫助說明「過去」和表示「疑問」。

  現在:Can you swim?
  過去:Could you swim last year?
  *"could""can"的過去式,幫助說明「過去」及「能夠」。

  現在:You may go.
  過去:You might go yesterday but why did you not go?
  *"might""may"的過去式,幫助說明「過去」及「可以」。

  現在:Where are you?
  過去:Where were you yesterday?
  *"were""are"的過去式。

Contractions

When to Use Contractions
Contractions' grammar is correct when used in spoken English and informal written.
Special Points to Remember:
1.      The verb 'be' as a principal verb can also be contracted
2.      's can stand for 'is' in the present and present continuos or 'has' in the present perfect
3.      'd can stand for 'had' in the past perfect or 'would' in conditional forms
4.      The modal 'may not' is not usually contracted

Contractions' grammar concerns auxiliary verbs. Contractions are formed by shortening auxiliary verbs.
Examples:
1.      They are going to meet their friends in St. Louis.
They're going to meet their friends in St. Louis.
2.      She is not a teacher.
She isn't a teacher.

l   Present Continuous -> is / am / are:
We are watching TV.
We're watching TV.

l   Present Perfect - have / has:
Susan has not visited her friends for a long time.
Susan hasn't visited her friends for a long time.

Who has been invited to the party?
Who's been invited to the party?
l   Present tenses -> do / does:
She does not work at the supermarket.
She doesn't work at the supermarket.

l   Past tenses -> did:
Mary bought a new coat last week.
They did not attend the meeting.
They didn't attend the meeting.

l   Future tenses -> will:
He will help you with your homework.
He'll help you with your homework.

l   Present Continuous -> is / am / are:
Where is Tom working today?
Where's Tom working today?

頻率副詞 Adverbs of Frequency
1.       頻率副詞顧名思義表示動作的次數與頻率。例如:always(總是)、often(常常)、sometimes(有時)、seldom(很少)、never(從不)、twice a week(一週兩次)等。通常以現在簡單式表達。

2.      頻率副詞通常置於一般動詞之前,be動詞、助動詞之後;片語頻率副詞通常置於句尾。例如:

l   She is always late for school.(她上課總是遲到。)

l   I often play tennis on weekends.(我時常在週末打網球。)

l   He never forgets his mother’s birthday.(他從沒忘記他母親的生日。)

3.      Sometimes 可放句中,句首,句尾。例如:

l   Sometimes I go to school by bus.

l   I sometimes go to school by bus.

l   I go to school by bus sometimes.


4.      Often 如果被quite, very 等副詞修飾時,則必須置於句尾。例如:

l   He often goes to the movies.

l   He goes to the movies very often.


5.      頻率副詞可以How often起首作問句。例如:

A: How often do you go to the movies?

B: We go to the movies twice a month.
